The UNESCO World Geopark that is the Bauges may be Chambéry’s crowning glory but the Chartreuse and Belledonne Mountains are nearby too. The three mountain ranges bring you unspoilt settings with outstanding flora and fauna where you can get away from it all and feast your senses.
This mid-mountain range deep in Savoie Mont Blanc is a UNESCO Geopark due to the 54 geosites identified here.
The park is home to outstanding flora and fauna and stands out for its incredible underground and aquatic heritage: Prérouge Cave (gateway to the deepest caving network in Savoie) and Pont du Diable Canyon (a canyoning must-do in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) are just a couple of its treasures. You’ll be caught in the magical landscapes between views of Le Revard and Pissieu Waterfall.
Some sites are easy to reach whilst others require a guide or specific skills. Find them on the Geosites interactive map.

Chartreuse was the homeland of the Chartreux order (1084) and is home to traditional villages surrounded by majestic nature that anyone can explore all year round.
It’s the perfect mountain range for all kinds of sports from hiking and hang-gliding to winter sports. It’s bursting with traditions and expertise so be sure to try its local produce and visit its workshops, exhibitions and museums.
Don’t miss: Cirque de Saint-Même with its waterfalls, a slice of heaven in Chartreuse, the Voie Sarde footpath, Savoir-Faire Route and cultural sites.

You can’t miss the Belledonne Mountains from Chambéry Valley! They treat passersby to views of their crisp snow-capped peaks most of the year.
This mountain range faces Chartreuse and the Bauges and towers above Combe de Savoie and Grésivaudan, the valley between Chambéry and Grenoble. The plateau’s rolling hills make way for heady peaks with steep ridges.
We may be surrounded by lofty mountains but if you love untamed nature, earthy landscapes, wetlands and mountain lakes then you won’t be disappointed!
